Fisheries Knowledge Exchange Projects
NEMO– Online Courses
An exchange of faculty between NEMO Northeast Maritime Online education under Northeast Maritime Institute (NMI) Center at Fairhaven Massachusetts and Imarsiornermik Ilinniarfik (Gronland Maritime Center, GMC) was conducted in June to learn about online maritime training methods and additional curricula to reach and teach remote students in Greenland.
Knowledge Exchange Project Outcomes:
The preliminary outcome of the NEMO Project is a MoU, (Memorandum of Understanding), and an Associate School Agreement between The Northeast Maritime Institute and The Greenland Maritime Center. These outcomes will enable the GMC to add new online curriculum and better reach students in settlements to learn at a distance. The MoU will be signed in late July and a NEMO Associate School Agreement will be presented to the GMC board in August. Curricula under NEMO will be available for GMC in English, Danish and Greenlandic.
As there are challenges in form of tuition fees and to ensure a sustainable and successful collaboration more time and support is needed.
Value Added Fisheries
The first leg of exchange of faculty between the University of Alaska Fairbanks’ Alaska Sea Grant program for value added fish processing with Imarsiornermik Ilinniarfik was completed in June. The purpose of the knowledge exchange was to send Chris Sannito, an Alaska Sea Grant faculty to Greenland to do a needs-assessment on what the second leg of knowledge exchange should focus on. Initially, the plan was to conduct Train-the-trainer courses to certify Greenlandic seafood producers and enable them to export to the US market.
Knowledge Exchange Project Outcomes:
A needs-assessment was completed. After meetings and site visits in local factories, the team learned that the courses were not needed. Instead, a conference on value added fisheries, community-based fish processing, and potential salmon hatcheries in Greenland is planned. UAF Alaska Sea Grant faculty, Dr. Quentin Fong and Chris Sannito will facilite and participate in the fisheries knowledge exchange with Tina Fairbanks, Executive Director of the Kodiak Regional Aquaculture Association for the next visit to Greenland in November.
